The "SCIENCE" Behind the ABS-CBN Logo

If you can see the ABS-CBN logo carefully, you can see the three colored rings: the red ring, the green ring and the blue ring, is also the color of the colored cathode-ray tubes used in colored television, as well as in the light spectrum. Well, that's Physics and Electronics...
Get it?

ABS-CBN to launch Digital TV
MANILA, Philippines - ABS-CBN is preparing to bring digital TV (DTTV) broadcasting to the Philippines in the first quarter of 2008.
With digital broadcasting’s superior image, improved audio quality, better reception capabilities and high-definition broadcast potential, DTTV, network officials say, is ABS-CBN’s way of “bringing global standards to Philippine broadcast.”
The United Kingdom is planning on switching off all analog telecasts in October 2007, and the US will broadcast exclusively in digital starting February 2009.
This digital rollout means that ABS-CBN will be broadcasting both analog and digital signals at the same time. Households that have not decided whether or not to go digital will still be able to see the regular broadcast, while digital households will be able to see cable-quality TV image and sound from the revolutionary network project, dubbed “Cable TV ng Masa.”
Deo Jordan, head of the Digital Broadcast Operations for ABS-CBN Broadcast Engineering Division (BED), says tests for DTTV started late 2006 in San Fernando, Pampanga and San Miguel, Bulacan.
“The sample audience in these areas received several hundred set-top boxes (STBs),” he relates. “We conducted surveys and focus group discussions with them. The tests were very informative.”
Jordan explains: “The tests supplied us with data on how to better design the transmission system, including information on how many transmitters we need to install to cover Mega Manila, at what power level we need to broadcast, and what the total cost may be if we do digital broadcasting full-time. We also realized that we needed to raise awareness on how easy it is to use an STB to convert an ordinary TV to receive DTTV signals.”
ABS-CBN plans to conduct test broadcasts in Metro Manila soon.

Charo Santos-Concio: The New ABS-CBN President
Former beauty queen and actress Charo Santos-Concio has been appointed as president of ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corp., taking over from interim president Eugenio Lopez III.In a disclosure, ABS-CBN said Santos-Concio is the company's fifth president. She was promoted from her executive vice president post, which she has held since 1998. ABS-CBN said that as president, Santos-Concio will lead the company's executive committee, and oversee operations of all subsidiaries.
Digital Television
ABS-CBN recently applied for a digital television-terrestrial service (DTT) license to the National Telecommunications Commission. Digital Television in the Philippines will utilize the DVB-T standard utilized in most of Europe. The Dutch company Impeq Technologies is one of ABS-CBN's consultants in the digital transition. The network is planning to also supply DTV boxes in areas where signal reception of Channel 2 is weak. Areas such as Valenzuela, Bulacan, Rizal, Cavite and Laguna are the potential market for the DTV set-top boxes. The Metro Manila market will receive DWWX-TV and DWAC-TV and the company's six other cable channels on the digital platform. It is unclear however if ABS-CBN or its sister channels will broadcast some of its programmes on high definition (HD) once it has digital channels.
The National Telecommunications Commission will be giving television broadcast companies until December 31, 2015, to fully convert from analog to digital technology, in line with the worldwide shift towards the use of DTT in broadcasting.
